Reasons To Support Your Local Farmer’s Market
Working in a spring garden.

From delicious fresh produce to meeting the people who grow your food, there are many reasons to shop at your local farmer’s market. And Howard County is lucky enough to have three separate markets for residents to shop at: The Kokomo Downtown Farmer’s Market, the Greentown Farmer’s Market, and the Russiaville Farmer’s Market. Each has its own unique offerings, but all offer benefits over shopping at large chain stores. Here are just few of the many benefits of shopping local.

The Food Has Better Flavor

Food fresh from the farm usually just tastes better! No picking well before it’s ripe and sitting in storage for weeks on end. Produce is picked when it’s ripe and at its most flavorful.

You Are Supporting Local Farmers

Small family farms have a hard time competing with today’s super farms that dominate food production in the US. By selling local, farmers get a better return for their produce and can reinvest it back in the local community. And by buying local, you insure others in the community can support their families.

Farmer’s Market Food is More Sustainable

Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate. Shipping uses large amounts of natural resources, contributes to pollution, and creates trash with extra packaging. Food at a farmer’s market travels shorter distances, uses less packaging, and is usually grown using more sustainable methods.

Foods Are Generally Healthier

Grocery store foods are usually highly processed and grown or raised using large amounts of pesticides and antibiotics. Some foods are even genetically modified! Food found at local farmer’s markets are usually minimally processed and grown using sustainable techniques. And fruits and vegetables are fresh and flavorful without the use of chemicals and waxes to make them look good or last longer.

There Is So Much Variety at the Farmer’s Market

Not only can you find a large variety of produce, but farmer’s markets often have other offerings too. Homemade one-of-a-kind crafts, baked goods, herbs and spices, homeopathic remedies, and much more. And you can find cooking tips, recipes, meal ideas, and helpful advice on everything from cooking to planting to home care. Most markets also offer children’s activities or local entertainment to enjoy while you shop.

Here in Howard County, there are three different Farmer’s Markets to choose from:

The Kokomo Downtown Farmer’s Market is located at the corner of Mulberry and Washington in Downtown Kokomo and is open every Saturday from May thru September from 9am-12pm.

The Greentown Farmer’s Market is located at 221 W Main Street in Greentown each Saturday through the end of October from 10am-2pm.

The Russiaville Farmer’s Market is located at 250 N Union St in Russiaville and is usually held on the second Sunday of the month during June-September from 11am-3pm.
